Works by Gus Weill

Secretary Of State W. Fox McKeithen is proud to announce that the traveling exhibition Works by Gus Weill is now on view at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum. The exhibit comes from the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, and the exhibition closing date is to be determined.

Gus Weill experienced careers that took him from a life of espionage, as a special agent, to a Broadway playwright, apolitical consultant in some of Louisiana's hottest political campaigns, a talk show host, and on to notoriety as one of Louisiana's most noted political authors. Mr. Weill's latest publication is The Cajuns.

Mr. Weill hosted two radio talk shows about Louisiana politics in the Baton Rouge area, It's a Weill Weill World and The Weill Side of Life. Mr. Weill's political literature traces Louisiana politics through his experiences and the stories told to him by state leaders who lived them. He listened carefully and documented every conversation. James Carville wrote that "No living person has more intimately participated in the events you are about to read than Gus Weill, events spanning half a century.... As for events he was too young to have witnessed or influenced, he made it his business to know about them firsthand from men like John McKeithen...whose election as governor many credited to Gus." Weill was selected by Governor Jimmie Davis to be his biographer.

Born on March 12, 1933. in Lafayette, Louisiana, Gus Weill graduated in journalism from Louisiana State University. He served for two years in Germany as a Special Agent in counterintelligence. He then became a partner in an advertising and public relations agency, established in 1958 with offices in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, with specialization in political public relations. The office was the agent for the campaigns of three of Louisiana's governors. From 1964 to 1968 Mr. Weill served as executive Secretary to the then Governor of Louisiana , John J. McKeithen: Following a career change, Mi-. Weill won the 1974 Stanley Drama Award, given each year to a professional playwright. His play, Geese ran for more than a year off Broadway. His previous novels include A Woman's Eyes, Dial Press, 1975; and The Bonnet Mm, Macmillan, 1978. Today, Mr. Weill lives in New York, New York.
