Conway Twitty
1933 - 1993

"Mr. Dependable", "The Best Friend A Song Ever Had" and "High Priest of Country Music" are just a few nicknames used to describe one of the biggest names in American popular music. Conway Twitty is the only musician to ever have 55 number one records in the United States, a feat that surpasses the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra!

Twitty was born Harold Lloyd Jenkins on September 1, 1933 in Friars Point, Mississippi. The son of a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, he attended high school in Tallulah, Louisiana. Twitty grew up listening to African American gospel music and Country music from Grand Ole Opry radio broadcasts.

After his discharge from the Army, Conway Twitty recorded his first number one hit, the Elvis inspired rock and roll ballad "It's Only Make Believe" on MGM records in 1958. He turned to Country music in 1965, and in twenty years had 61 top ten hits including 31 number ones. After a tremendously successful career, Conway Twitty collapsed on his tour bus after a string of shows in Branson, Missouri. He later died in a Springfield, Missouri hospital on June 5, 1993.
