1886 - Apache Chief Geronimo surrenders ending the last major US-Indian War.

1682 - English astronomer Edmund Haley sees his namesake comet.

Louisiana History
1957 - The Harvey Canal Tunnel is opened.
1958 - Louisiana State University in New Orleans opened its doors for the first time with an enrollment of 1500 freshmen students.
1960 - Former governor Earl Kemp Long died and was buried in a family plot given to the Long family at Earl K. Long Memorial State Park in Winnfield, LA. Rumor his it that Long was buried in his "beloved pea patch" in Winn Parish. The "pea patch" is Uncle Earl's farm, which is next to the state park. However, at best, Long is buried next to his "beloved pea patch", not in it.

1893 - General Claire Chennault (military aviator) is born in Commerce, Texas. He became air advisor to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek of China and organized the famous Flying Tiger squadron composed of volunteer American pilots who fought with China against Japan in 1941.

1901 - President William McKinley is shot by anarchist Leon Czolgolsz.

1965 - India invades West Pakistan.
1976 - Russian pilot Belenko defects to Japan in a Mig 25 jet.

1943 - General Eisenhower announces the unconditional surrender of Italy in W.W.II.
1945 - Hideki Tojo, Japanese Prime Minister during most of the war, attempts suicide rather than face a war crimes trial. The attempt fails, and he is later hanged.
