CSPAN's
American Presidents:
Life Portraits Exhibition
The Exhibit
Sponsored by C-SPAN and the White House Historical Association,
this exhibit
features the only complete collection of American presidential oil portraits
by one artist, Chas Fagan. Accompanying the Fagan portraits are
biographical sketches of the 42 presidents along with photographs and prints
illustrating each president's time in the White House. These photographs
often show the presidents in candid moments with their families.
As part of an ongoing committment to historical programming, C-SPAN created
this exhibit as an extension of its 1999 series which explored the personal
lives of the presidents. The exhibit debuted in Washington, DC, in
September 1999.
Chas Fagan
Commissioned by C-SPAN to create 42 oil portraits of the American
presidents, Mr. Fagan worked for three months in his Glenside, PA, studio to
complete the project. A 1988 Yale University graduate with a degree in
Russian and East European Studies, Mr. Fagan's only formal art training came
when he was ten and living in Brussels. Hungarian portraitist Ilona Karoly
Szechenyi selected the young man for a series of art lessons. During his
teenage years, Mr. Fagan's family returned to the United States and settled
in rural Pennsylvania, the subject of many of his landscape paintings. He
has worked as a portraitist, landscape artist and sculptor.
Schedule
The public is invited to the free opening reception on Sunday, February 10, 2002.
